How GunRegistry.us works
Three kinds of people use it: owners, verified law-enforcement agencies, and dealers. GunRegistry.us is in development, so details may change before launch.
Owners
- Create an account with an alias (no email) and a master password. Your browser does the key work and shows a recovery code once. Print it.
- Add your firearms. They’re saved encrypted in your vault. Adding a gun does not put its serial on file in plain text.
- Report a loss. If a gun is lost or stolen, publish a report for that one gun. Agencies can now see its status when they run the serial.
- Recover or sell. Mark it recovered when you get it back, or mark it sold and give the buyer a single-use transfer token.
Law enforcement
- Apply. Agencies are verified by hand, then receive a key, shown once.
- Look up a serial on the web form or through the API.
- Get a status: stolen, lost, or recovered with a date, report reference, and contested flag, or “no lost/stolen report.”
Dealers
- Get verified and receive a partner key.
- Push an acquisition from your bound book: manufacturer, model, serial, type, caliber.
- Hand over the claim token. It goes on the buyer’s paperwork, and the buyer claims the gun into their vault.
What an agency sees
| If the serial is… | The lookup returns |
|---|---|
| Reported stolen, lost, or recovered | That status, the date it changed, the report reference, and whether it’s contested |
| Only in an owner’s vault, sold, unclaimed, or unknown | “No lost/stolen report” |
An agency’s stolen report stays active until an agency recovery report or a manual review clears it. An owner’s report that disagrees marks it contested; it doesn’t erase it.
